Our instructors are all fully qualified to teach and are ranked through the YKKF. Within the YKKF and at Brunel, obtaining a black belt does not give you the right to teach, it simply means that you have begun your journey within the martial arts. In order to teach many more qualifications and attended classes are required. At this dojo each instructor has been graded to the highest standards by senior ranking masters from around the world and have attended and passed all other relevant material required to teach. In addition to their physical knowledge of the martial arts, they each have an in depth knowledge of the theoretical side of the art, collectively passing written examinations with above 80% averages.

Our instructors, before teaching are required to study, obtain and be conversant with the following:

- 400 hours logged and recorded time as a teaching assistant countersigned by a licensed instructor.

- 40 hours logged and recorded as an independent teaching assistant countersigned by a licensed instructor.

- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

- St John’s Ambulance F.A.W (UK)

- Police CRB Check

- Muscle Groups and their development.

- Nutrition Studies

- Basic knowledge of Natural and Herbal Medicines

- Basic Knowledge of Massage Therapy

- The Art of Communication

- Marketing & Sales business principles (Including Basic Accounting)

- Basic Psychology

- Biomechanics

- Philosophy of the Way of the Warrior (Bushido)

- Methodology of teaching Children vs. Adults

- Methodology of teaching the physically and mentally challenged

- Historical and cultural studies of Japan with relevance to martial arts.

All of these are in addition to a detailed, full understanding and practical application of the martial art system which is studied.
